Five County Demographics and Vulnerability

The five county area is vulnerable to hazardous materials accidents in several ways.

  • Living near or visiting near a transportation accident that involves hazardous materials.  Living near or visiting near an accident at a stationary source that stores hazardous materials.  Certain sites are particularly vulnerable to either transportation or stationary site accidents, such as schools, hospitals, nursing homes or jails
  • Finally there are sensitive environmental sites that are subject to special risks from either transportation or stationary site accidents.

It would appear that those most vulnerable are in the non-rural areas of our communities. We expect these exposures to risks to continue to increase as we move more and more to an urban area and as the numbers and amounts of hazardous chemicals that are used in our economies increases.
